Hacklet: Remove Gwibber tray icon

Like Pidgin, Gwibber offers you the option to “minimize to tray” when you close the Gwibber window, it also has an option to not show a tray icon.  However, I’d imagine to keep the window from being lost to the user, you can’t do both.  If you make Gwibber minimize to the system tray, it will automatically turn on the tray icon.

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) introduced the new Indicator Applet, which lets applications that need to show indications/notifications to a user congregate all in one place.  Gwibber is one such application that makes use of the Indicator Applet, but the sanity check I mentioned above means you still get tray clutter.  Here is a quick, simple hack you can make to the Gwibber code to override this behavior.

1. sudo gedit /usr/share/pyshared/gwibber/client.py (If you installed Gwibber from the repos, if you’ve checked out the source it’s under $src/gwibber/client.py)

2. Locate the on_window_close method.

3. Comment out the line: self.preferences["show_tray_icon"] = True (Put a # at the beginning of the line)

4. Save and restart Gwibber!  Now you can minimize to tray without showing a tray icon.  Use the Gwibber entry in the Indicator Applet menu to bring the window back up.

Florida Team Rockledge Release Party – June 26, 2009

Our First Rockledge Jaunty release party was held on June 26th. It started around 6 p.m. There were 7 people that showed with only three of them being members of the Florida Team. We started off by helping one of the guests dual boot his work laptop with Jaunty. We fixed another attendee’s issue , in which LogMeIn would refresh his entire screen during his remote sessions with using Ubuntu. We entertained questions on how to do things easier when beginning to first use Ubuntu, for example why would you use the terminal with apt-get vs. opening the gui to install applications and add repositories.

Once everyone had Jaunty installed, and the questions were all answered… we all decided to relax with a little bit of World Of Padman action. Lupine was our resident bartender and made some super good Mojito’s that would surely rival Chili’s version. After a bit Lupine ordered pizza for everyone and we all had our fill of some cool combination pizzas (The best hands down was the grilled chicken with bell peppers).

We called it quits close to 10:30, and everyone had a great time. In the future, we plan on giving more notice so others can plan to attend. Thanks to those that were able to attend, and to Lupine for hosting it!
